Isaiah 42
- 1My servant, who I uphold, my elect, the one my soul delights in, I have put my spirit on him: he shall bring justice to the Gentiles.
- 2He shall not cry, or lift up, or cause his voice to be heard in the street.
- 3A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not put out: he shall faithfully bring justice.
- 4He shall not fail or be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.
- 5God the Lord says this, he who created the heavens, and stretched them out. He who spread out the earth, and that which comes out of it. He who gives breath to the people on it, and spirit to those who walk in it:
- 6I the Lord have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and give you for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles.
- 7To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and those who sit in darkness out of the prison house.
- 8I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to carved idols.
- 9The former things have happened, and new things do I declare: before they spring up I tell you of them.
- 10Sing to the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, you that go down to the sea, and all that is in it, the isles, and its people.
- 11Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar does inhabit: let the people of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains.
- 12Let them give glory to the Lord, and declare his praise in the islands.
- 13The Lord shall go out as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yes, roar. He shall overcome his enemies.
- 14I have long time said nothing. I have been still, and refrained myself: now I will cry like a woman in labor. I will destroy and devour at once.
- 15I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs. I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.
- 16And I will bring the blind by a way that they did not know. I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. I will do these things to them, and not abandon them.
- 17They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in carved idols, that say to the metal idols, You are our gods.
- 18Hear, you deaf. You blind, that you may see.
- 19Who is blind, but my servant? Or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? Who is blind as he who is perfect, and blind as the Lord's servant?
- 20Seeing many things, but you do not observe, opening the ears, but he does not hear.
- 21The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake. He will make the law great, and make it honorable.
- 22But this is a people robbed and plundered. They are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivers. They are plundered, and no one says, Give them back.
- 23Who among you will listen to this? Who will listen and hear for the time to come?
- 24Who gave Jacob to be plundered, and Israel to the robbers? Did not the Lord, the one we have sinned against? For they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient to his law.
- 25Therefore he has poured on him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it has set him on fire all around, yet he did not know, and it burned him, yet he did not lay it to heart.
