Isaiah 36
- 1Now it happened in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.
- 2And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the water channel of the upper pool, on the road to the cloth washer's field.
- 3Then Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, who managed the palace, came out to him, along with Shebna the scribe and Joah, Asaph's son, the record keeper.
- 4And Rabshakeh said to them, Tell Hezekiah, This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is the basis of your confidence?
- 5You say, "I have counsel and strength for war," but I say these are only empty words. Who are you trusting in now, that you rebel against me?
- 6You are leaning on Egypt, a staff made of a broken reed. If a man leans on it, it will pierce his hand. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt is like to all who trust in him.
- 7But if you say to me, We trust in the Lord our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, You shall worship before this altar?
- 8Now therefore give pledges, I pray you, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
- 9How then can you turn back even one of my master's least important officers, while relying on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
- 10And have I now come up against this land to destroy it without the Lord? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land and destroy it.
- 11Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to Rabshakeh, Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, because we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah where the people on the wall can hear.
- 12But Rabshakeh said, Did my master send me to speak these words to your master and to you? Did he not send me to the men sitting on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine along with you?
- 13Then Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in the language of Judah, saying, Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
- 14The king says this, Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. For he shall not be able to deliver you.
- 15Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
- 16Do not listen to Hezekiah. For the king of Assyria says this, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink every one the waters of his own cistern.
- 17Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
- 18Be careful that Hezekiah does not persuade you when he says, "The Lord will deliver us." Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
- 19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? And have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
- 20Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
- 21But they kept silent and did not answer him a word, for the king had commanded, Do not answer him.
- 22Then Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, who managed the palace, Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the record keeper, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him what Rabshakeh had said.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Isaiah 36 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
