Luke 5
- 1As the people pressed on him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
- 2And saw two ships standing by the lake. But the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
- 3And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and asked him that he would push out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
- 4Now when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch.
- 5And Simon answering said to him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing. But at your word I will let down the net.
- 6And when they had done this, they caught a huge haul of fish, and their net broke.
- 7And they waved to their partners, who were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
- 8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Go away from me. For I am a sinful man, O Lord.
- 9For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish they had taken.
- 10And so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not fear. From now on you will catch men.
- 11And when they had brought their ships to land, they abandoned all, and followed him.
- 12When he was in a city, a man full of leprosy, seeing Jesus, fell on his face, and begged him, saying, Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.
- 13And he put out his hand, and touched him, saying, I will. Be clean. And immediately the leprosy left him.
- 14And he charged him to tell no one. But go, and show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.
- 15But so much the more his fame went abroad. And great crowds came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their sicknesses.
- 16And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
- 17One day, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
- 18And men brought a paralyzed man on a bed, and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
- 19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the crowd, they went on the rooftop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the middle before Jesus.
- 20And when he saw their faith, he said to him, Man, your sins are forgiven you.
- 21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
- 22But when Jesus noticed their thoughts, he answering said to them, Why do you reason in your hearts?
- 23Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Rise up and walk?
- 24But that you may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralyzed, I say to you, Arise, and take up your couch, and go into your house.
- 25And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that on which he lay, and went to his own house, glorifying God.
- 26And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things today.
- 27And after these things he went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, Follow me.
- 28And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
- 29And Levi made him a great feast in his own house. And there was a great company of tax collectors and of others who sat down with them.
- 30But their scribes and Pharisees complained against his disciples, saying, Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?
- 31And Jesus answering said to them, Those who are well do not need a doctor, but those who are sick.
- 32I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
- 33And they said to him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?
- 34And he said to them, Can you make the friends of the groom fast, while the groom is with them?
- 35But the days will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.
- 36And he also told them a parable. No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one. Otherwise he tears the new garment, and the piece from the new does not match the old.
- 37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Else the new wine will burst the wineskins, and be spilled, and the wineskins will perish.
- 38But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved.
- 39No one also having drunk old wine immediately desires new. For he says, The old is better.
