Luke 14
- 1As he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, they watched him.
- 2And there was a man before him who had severe swelling.
- 3And Jesus answering spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
- 4And they kept silent. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go.
- 5And he answered them, saying, Which of you shall have a donkey or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?
- 6And they could not answer him again to these things.
- 7And he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of highest honor, saying to them,
- 8When someone invites you to a wedding, do not sit in the place of highest honor. Someone more honored than you may have been invited by him.
- 9And he who invited you and him will come and say to you, Give this man your place. Then you begin with shame to take the lowest place.
- 10But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher. Then you shall have honor in the presence of those who sit at the meal with you.
- 11For whoever lifts himself up shall be brought low, and he who humbles himself shall be lifted high.
- 12Then he also said to the man who had invited him: When you give a dinner or supper, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, so that they do not invite you back and repay you.
- 13But when you make a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.
- 14And you shall be blessed, for they cannot repay you. For you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.
- 15And when one of those who sat at the meal with him heard these things, he said to him, Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
- 16Then he said to him, A man made a great supper, and invited many.
- 17And he sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, Come, for all things are now ready.
- 18And they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.
- 19And another said, I have bought five pairs of oxen, and I go to test them. Please excuse me.
- 20And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
- 21So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind.
- 22And the servant said, Lord, it is done as you have commanded, and yet there is room.
- 23And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
- 24For I say to you, None of those men who were invited shall taste of my supper.
- 25And great crowds went with him. And he turned, and said to them,
- 26If any man comes to me, and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
- 27And whoever does not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
- 28For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?
- 29Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish, everyone who sees it may begin to mock him,
- 30Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
- 31Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
- 32Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation, and asks for conditions of peace.
- 33So likewise, whoever of you does not abandon all that he has cannot be my disciple.
- 34Salt is good. But if the salt has lost its flavor, with what shall it be seasoned?
- 35It is not fit for the land, or for the manure pile, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Luke 14 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVAnd it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

KJVAnd he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them.
GIGAKJVAnd he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of highest honor, saying to them,
KJVWhen thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;
GIGAKJVWhen someone invites you to a wedding, do not sit in the place of highest honor. Someone more honored than you may have been invited by him.
KJVAnd he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
GIGAKJVAnd he who invited you and him will come and say to you, Give this man your place. Then you begin with shame to take the lowest place.
KJVBut when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
GIGAKJVBut when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher. Then you shall have honor in the presence of those who sit at the meal with you.
KJVFor whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
GIGAKJVFor whoever lifts himself up shall be brought low, and he who humbles himself shall be lifted high.
KJVThen said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
GIGAKJVThen he also said to the man who had invited him: When you give a dinner or supper, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, so that they do not invite you back and repay you.
KJVBut when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
GIGAKJVBut when you make a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.
KJVAnd thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
GIGAKJVAnd you shall be blessed, for they cannot repay you. For you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.
KJVAnd when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
GIGAKJVAnd when one of those who sat at the meal with him heard these things, he said to him, Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

KJVAnd another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
GIGAKJVAnd another said, I have bought five pairs of oxen, and I go to test them. Please excuse me.
KJVSo that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
GIGAKJVSo that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind.
KJVAnd the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
GIGAKJVAnd the servant said, Lord, it is done as you have commanded, and yet there is room.

GIGAKJVFor which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?
KJVLest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
GIGAKJVOtherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish, everyone who sees it may begin to mock him,
KJVOr what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
GIGAKJVOr what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
KJVOr else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
GIGAKJVOr else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation, and asks for conditions of peace.
KJVSo likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
GIGAKJVSo likewise, whoever of you does not abandon all that he has cannot be my disciple.
