Matthew 6
- 1Be careful that you do not do your giving to the poor in front of people, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
- 2Therefore when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
- 3But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does,
- 4That your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret himself shall reward you openly.
- 5And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
- 6But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret shall reward you openly.
- 7But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do. For they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
- 8So do not be like them. For your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him.
- 9Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored as holy.
- 10Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
- 11Give us this day our daily bread.
- 12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
- 13And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
- 14For if you forgive men their sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
- 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, neither will your Father forgive your sins.
- 16Also when you fast, do not put on a sad face, as the hypocrites do. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
- 17But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face,
- 18That you do not appear to men to fast, but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, shall reward you openly.
- 19Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal.
- 20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where no moth or rust corrupts, and where thieves do not break through or steal.
- 21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
- 22The light of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body shall be full of light.
- 23But if your eye is evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
- 24No one can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other, or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
- 25Therefore I say to you, Do not worry about your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink, or for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than clothing?
- 26Look at the birds of the air. For they do not sow, neither do they reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they?
- 27Which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life?
- 28And why worry about clothing? Consider how the lilies in the field grow. They do not work or spin thread.
- 29And yet I say to you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.
- 30Therefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
- 31Therefore do not worry, saying, What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?
- 32For after all these things the Gentiles seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things.
- 33But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness. And all these things shall be added to you.
- 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow. For tomorrow will worry about its own troubles. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Matthew 6 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVTake heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
GIGAKJVBe careful that you do not do your giving to the poor in front of people, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
KJVTherefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
GIGAKJVTherefore when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
KJVBut when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
GIGAKJVBut when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does,
KJVThat thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
GIGAKJVThat your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret himself shall reward you openly.
KJVAnd when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
GIGAKJVAnd when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
KJVBut thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
GIGAKJVBut you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret shall reward you openly.
KJVBut when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
GIGAKJVBut when you pray, do not use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do. For they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
KJVBe not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
GIGAKJVSo do not be like them. For your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him.
KJVAfter this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
GIGAKJVPray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored as holy.
KJVThy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
GIGAKJVYour kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
KJVAnd lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
GIGAKJVAnd do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
KJVFor if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
GIGAKJVFor if you forgive men their sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
KJVBut if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
GIGAKJVBut if you do not forgive men their sins, neither will your Father forgive your sins.
KJVMoreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
GIGAKJVAlso when you fast, do not put on a sad face, as the hypocrites do. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
KJVBut thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
GIGAKJVBut you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face,
KJVThat thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
GIGAKJVThat you do not appear to men to fast, but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, shall reward you openly.
KJVLay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
GIGAKJVDo not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal.
KJVBut lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
GIGAKJVBut lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where no moth or rust corrupts, and where thieves do not break through or steal.
KJVThe light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
GIGAKJVThe light of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body shall be full of light.
KJVBut if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
GIGAKJVBut if your eye is evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
KJVNo man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
GIGAKJVNo one can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other, or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
KJVTherefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
GIGAKJVTherefore I say to you, Do not worry about your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink, or for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than clothing?
KJVBehold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
GIGAKJVLook at the birds of the air. For they do not sow, neither do they reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they?
KJVWhich of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
GIGAKJVWhich of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life?
KJVAnd why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
GIGAKJVAnd why worry about clothing? Consider how the lilies in the field grow. They do not work or spin thread.
KJVAnd yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
GIGAKJVAnd yet I say to you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.
KJVWherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
GIGAKJVTherefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
KJVTherefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
GIGAKJVTherefore do not worry, saying, What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?
KJV(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
GIGAKJVFor after all these things the Gentiles seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things.
KJVBut seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
GIGAKJVBut seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness. And all these things shall be added to you.
KJVTake therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
GIGAKJVTherefore do not worry about tomorrow. For tomorrow will worry about its own troubles. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
