Matthew 14
- 1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
- 2And said to his servants, This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead. Therefore mighty works show themselves in him.
- 3For Herod had seized John, bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
- 4For John said to him, It is not lawful for you to have her.
- 5And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they counted him as a prophet.
- 6But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
- 7Then he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask.
- 8And she, having been instructed beforehand by her mother, said, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
- 9And the king was sorry. Yet because of his oath, and those who sat with him at the meal, he commanded it to be given her.
- 10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
- 11And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl. And she brought it to her mother.
- 12And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
- 13When Jesus heard of it, he left there by ship to a deserted place by himself. When the people heard of it, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
- 14And Jesus went out and saw a great crowd, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
- 15And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a deserted place, and the time is now past. Send the crowd away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.
- 16But Jesus said to them, They need not leave. You give them something to eat.
- 17And they say to him, We have here only five loaves, and two fish.
- 18He said, Bring them here to me.
- 19And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the crowd.
- 20And they all ate and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.
- 21And those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
- 22And immediately Jesus made his disciples get into a ship and go before him to the other side, while he sent the crowds away.
- 23And when he had sent the crowds away, he went up on a mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
- 24But the ship was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by waves. For the wind was contrary.
- 25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
- 26And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a ghost. And they cried out for fear.
- 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid.
- 28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.
- 29And he said, Come. And when Peter had come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
- 30But when he saw the boisterous wind, he was afraid. And beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
- 31And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, and caught him, and said to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?
- 32And when they had come into the ship, the wind stopped.
- 33Then those who were in the ship came and worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.
- 34And when they had crossed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
- 35And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent out into all the surrounding country, and brought to him all who were diseased.
- 36And they begged him that they might only touch the hem of his garment. And as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
