Matthew 11
- 1When Jesus had finished commanding his twelve disciples, he left there to teach and to preach in their cities.
- 2Now when John had heard in prison of the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
- 3And said to him, Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?
- 4Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John again the things you hear and see.
- 5The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk. Lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear. The dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
- 6And blessed is the person who does not turn away because of me.
- 7As they left, Jesus began to say to the crowds about John, What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
- 8But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
- 9But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
- 10For this is the one it is written about, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.
- 11Truly I say to you, Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
- 12And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven endures violence, and the violent take it by force.
- 13For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
- 14And if you will receive it, this is Elijah, who was to come.
- 15He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
- 16But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets, calling to their friends,
- 17And saying, We played the flute for you, and you did not dance. We mourned for you, and you did not lament.
- 18For John came, not eating or drinking, and they say, He has a demon.
- 19The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. But wisdom is justified by her children.
- 20Then he began to rebuke the cities where most of his mighty works were done, because they did not repent.
- 21Disaster is coming to you, Chorazin! Disaster is coming to you, Bethsaida! If the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in rough mourning clothes and ashes.
- 22But I say to you, It will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
- 23And you, Capernaum, who are lifted high to heaven, will be brought down to hell. If the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
- 24But I say to you, It will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.
- 25At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and clever, and have revealed them to infants.
- 26Even so, Father. For so it seemed good in your sight.
- 27All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father. Neither does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone the Son chooses to reveal him to.
- 28Come to me, all of you who labor and carry a heavy load, and I will give you rest.
- 29Take my yoke on you, and learn from me. For I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
- 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
