Matthew 18
- 1At the same time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
- 2And Jesus called a little child to him, and set him among them,
- 3And said, Truly I say to you, Unless you turn and become as little children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
- 4Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
- 5And whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me.
- 6But if anyone leads one of these little ones who believe in me into sin, it would be better for that person to have a millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the deep sea.
- 7Disaster is coming to the world because of things that lead people into sin! Such things must come, but disaster is coming to the person who brings them!
- 8Therefore if your hand or your foot leads you into sin, cut them off and cast them from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
- 9And if your eye leads you into sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.
- 10See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I say to you, their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.
- 11For the Son of man has come to save that which was lost.
- 12What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one wanders away, does he not leave the ninety-nine, go into the mountains, and look for the one that wandered away?
- 13And if he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.
- 14Even so it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
- 15Also if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.
- 16But if he will not hear you, then take with you one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
- 17And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses to hear the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
- 18Truly I say to you, Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth shall be released in heaven.
- 19Again I say to you, If two of you agree on earth concerning anything they ask, it shall be done for them by my Father in heaven.
- 20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am among them.
- 21Then Peter came to him and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?
- 22Jesus says to him, I do not say to you, Up to seven times, but, Up to seventy times seven.
- 23Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
- 24And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand bags of silver.
- 25But since he could not pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.
- 26The servant therefore fell down, and worshiped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.
- 27Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and released him, and forgave him the debt.
- 28But that same servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me what you owe.
- 29And his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.
- 30And he would not. He went and cast him into prison till he should pay the debt.
- 31So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told their lord all that was done.
- 32Then his lord, after he had called him, said to him, You wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.
- 33Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, even as I had pity on you?
- 34And his lord was angry, and delivered him to the torturers till he should pay all that was due to him.
- 35So likewise my heavenly Father will also do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother or sister's sins from the heart.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Matthew 18 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVAt the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

GIGAKJVAnd whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me.
KJVBut whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
GIGAKJVBut if anyone leads one of these little ones who believe in me into sin, it would be better for that person to have a millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the deep sea.
KJVWoe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
GIGAKJVDisaster is coming to the world because of things that lead people into sin! Such things must come, but disaster is coming to the person who brings them!
KJVWherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

GIGAKJVWhat do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one wanders away, does he not leave the ninety-nine, go into the mountains, and look for the one that wandered away?
KJVAnd if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.
GIGAKJVAnd if he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.

KJVMoreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
GIGAKJVAlso if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.

GIGAKJVAnd if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses to hear the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
KJVVerily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

KJVAnd when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.
GIGAKJVAnd when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand bags of silver.
KJVBut forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

KJVBut the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
GIGAKJVBut that same servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me what you owe.
KJVAnd his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
GIGAKJVAnd his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.
KJVAnd he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.
GIGAKJVAnd he would not. He went and cast him into prison till he should pay the debt.
KJVSo when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
GIGAKJVSo when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told their lord all that was done.
KJVThen his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
GIGAKJVThen his lord, after he had called him, said to him, You wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.
KJVShouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?
