Romans 4
- 1What shall we say then that Abraham, our father by natural birth, has found?
- 2For if Abraham were justified by works, he has something to glory in, but not before God.
- 3For what says the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.
- 4Now to him who works the reward is not counted of grace, but of debt.
- 5But to him who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the godless, his faith is counted for righteousness.
- 6Even as David also describes the blessedness of the man that God counts as righteous without works.
- 7Saying, Blessed are they whose wrongdoings are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
- 8Blessed is the man the Lord will not charge with sin.
- 9Does this blessedness then come on the circumcision only, or on the uncircumcision also? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham for righteousness.
- 10How was it then counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
- 11And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are not circumcised, that righteousness might be counted to them also.
- 12And the father of circumcision to those who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
- 13For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
- 14For if those who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect.
- 15Because the law works wrath. For where no law is, there is no breaking of the law.
- 16Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace, to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
- 17As it is written, I have made you a father of many nations, in the presence of the God he believed, who gives life to the dead, and calls those things which do not exist as though they were.
- 18Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall your seed be.
- 19And being not weak in faith, he did not consider his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb.
- 20He did not stagger at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God.
- 21And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
- 22And therefore it was counted to him as righteousness.
- 23Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was counted to him.
- 24But for us also, who will have it counted to us if we believe on him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead.
- 25Who was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Romans 4 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVWhat shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
GIGAKJVWhat shall we say then that Abraham, our father by natural birth, has found?
KJVFor if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
GIGAKJVFor if Abraham were justified by works, he has something to glory in, but not before God.
KJVFor what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
GIGAKJVFor what says the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.
KJVNow to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
GIGAKJVNow to him who works the reward is not counted of grace, but of debt.
KJVBut to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
GIGAKJVBut to him who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the godless, his faith is counted for righteousness.
KJVEven as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
GIGAKJVEven as David also describes the blessedness of the man that God counts as righteous without works.
KJVSaying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
GIGAKJVSaying, Blessed are they whose wrongdoings are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
KJVBlessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
GIGAKJVBlessed is the man the Lord will not charge with sin.
KJVCometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
GIGAKJVDoes this blessedness then come on the circumcision only, or on the uncircumcision also? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham for righteousness.
KJVHow was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
GIGAKJVHow was it then counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
KJVAnd he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
GIGAKJVAnd he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are not circumcised, that righteousness might be counted to them also.
KJVAnd the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
GIGAKJVAnd the father of circumcision to those who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
KJVFor if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
GIGAKJVFor if those who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect.
KJVBecause the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
GIGAKJVBecause the law works wrath. For where no law is, there is no breaking of the law.
KJVTherefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
GIGAKJVTherefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace, to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
KJV(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
GIGAKJVAs it is written, I have made you a father of many nations, in the presence of the God he believed, who gives life to the dead, and calls those things which do not exist as though they were.
KJVWho against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
GIGAKJVWho against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall your seed be.
KJVAnd being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:
GIGAKJVAnd being not weak in faith, he did not consider his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb.
KJVHe staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
GIGAKJVHe did not stagger at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God.
KJVAnd therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
GIGAKJVAnd therefore it was counted to him as righteousness.
KJVNow it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
GIGAKJVNow it was not written for his sake alone, that it was counted to him.
KJVBut for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
GIGAKJVBut for us also, who will have it counted to us if we believe on him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead.
KJVWho was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
GIGAKJVWho was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification.
