Romans 13
- 1Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God. The authorities that exist are appointed by God.
- 2Whoever therefore resists the authority, resists the rule of God. And those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.
- 3For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Do you want to have no fear of the authority? Do what is good, and you shall have praise from it.
- 4For he is the minister of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid. For he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the minister of God, an avenger to execute wrath on him who does evil.
- 5Therefore you must be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience' sake.
- 6This is also why you pay taxes: the authorities are God's servants, continually attending to this work.
- 7So pay everyone what you owe: taxes to those owed taxes, customs duties to those owed duties, respect to those owed respect, and honor to those owed honor.
- 8Owe no man anything, but to love one another. For he who loves another has fulfilled the law.
- 9For this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, You shall not crave, and if there is any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
- 10Love works no ill to his neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
- 11And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep. For now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
- 12The night is far spent, the day is near. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
- 13Let us behave properly, as in daylight: not in wild parties and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and indecency, not in quarrels and jealousy.
- 14But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not make provision for the flesh, to fulfil its desires.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Romans 13 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVLet every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
GIGAKJVLet everyone be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God. The authorities that exist are appointed by God.
KJVWhosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
GIGAKJVWhoever therefore resists the authority, resists the rule of God. And those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.
KJVFor rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
GIGAKJVFor rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Do you want to have no fear of the authority? Do what is good, and you shall have praise from it.
KJVFor he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
GIGAKJVFor he is the minister of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid. For he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the minister of God, an avenger to execute wrath on him who does evil.
KJVWherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
GIGAKJVTherefore you must be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience' sake.
KJVFor for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
GIGAKJVThis is also why you pay taxes: the authorities are God's servants, continually attending to this work.
KJVRender therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
GIGAKJVSo pay everyone what you owe: taxes to those owed taxes, customs duties to those owed duties, respect to those owed respect, and honor to those owed honor.
KJVOwe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
GIGAKJVOwe no man anything, but to love one another. For he who loves another has fulfilled the law.
KJVFor this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
GIGAKJVFor this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, You shall not crave, and if there is any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
KJVLove worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
GIGAKJVLove works no ill to his neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
KJVAnd that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
GIGAKJVAnd that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep. For now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
KJVThe night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
GIGAKJVThe night is far spent, the day is near. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
KJVLet us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
GIGAKJVLet us behave properly, as in daylight: not in wild parties and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and indecency, not in quarrels and jealousy.
KJVBut put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
GIGAKJVBut put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not make provision for the flesh, to fulfil its desires.
