Hebrews 12
- 1Therefore seeing we also are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily traps us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
- 2Looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
- 3Consider the one who endured such opposition from sinners against himself, so that you do not grow weary and lose heart.
- 4You have not yet resisted to blood, struggling against sin.
- 5And you have forgotten the encouragement which speaks to you as to children, My son, do not despise the discipline of the Lord, or faint when you are rebuked by him.
- 6For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and whips every son he accepts.
- 7If you endure discipline, God deals with you as with sons. For what son is there that the father does not discipline?
- 8But if you are without discipline, of which all are sharers, then you are illegitimate, and not sons.
- 9Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence. Shall we not much rather submit to the Father of spirits, and live?
- 10For they truly for a few days disciplined us as seemed good to them, but he for our profit, that we might be sharers in his holiness.
- 11Now no discipline for the present seems to be joyous, but painful. But afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.
- 12Therefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the weak knees.
- 13Make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame is not turned out of the way, but is healed instead.
- 14Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
- 15Watch carefully so that no one falls short of God's grace, and no root of bitterness grows up to trouble you and defile many.
- 16And so that no one is sexually immoral or treats holy things with contempt, like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.
- 17For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. For he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
- 18For you have not come to the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, or to blackness, and darkness, and storm,
- 19And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words, which voice those who heard begged that the word should not be spoken to them any more.
- 20For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart.
- 21And so terrifying was the sight, that Moses said, I greatly fear and quake:
- 22But you have come to mount Zion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
- 23To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, who are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
- 24And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better things than that of Abel.
- 25See that you do not refuse him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape, if we turn away from him who speaks from heaven.
- 26Whose voice then shook the earth. But now he has promised, saying, Yet once more I do not shake the earth only, but also heaven.
- 27And this word, Yet once more, signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
- 28Therefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.
- 29For our God is a consuming fire.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Hebrews 12 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVWherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
GIGAKJVTherefore seeing we also are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily traps us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
KJVLooking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
GIGAKJVLooking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
KJVFor consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
GIGAKJVConsider the one who endured such opposition from sinners against himself, so that you do not grow weary and lose heart.
KJVYe have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
GIGAKJVYou have not yet resisted to blood, struggling against sin.
KJVAnd ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
GIGAKJVAnd you have forgotten the encouragement which speaks to you as to children, My son, do not despise the discipline of the Lord, or faint when you are rebuked by him.
KJVFor whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
GIGAKJVFor the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and whips every son he accepts.
KJVIf ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
GIGAKJVIf you endure discipline, God deals with you as with sons. For what son is there that the father does not discipline?
KJVBut if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
GIGAKJVBut if you are without discipline, of which all are sharers, then you are illegitimate, and not sons.
KJVFurthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
GIGAKJVFurthermore we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence. Shall we not much rather submit to the Father of spirits, and live?
KJVFor they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
GIGAKJVFor they truly for a few days disciplined us as seemed good to them, but he for our profit, that we might be sharers in his holiness.
KJVNow no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
GIGAKJVNow no discipline for the present seems to be joyous, but painful. But afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.
KJVWherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
GIGAKJVTherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the weak knees.
KJVAnd make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
GIGAKJVMake straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame is not turned out of the way, but is healed instead.
KJVFollow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
GIGAKJVFollow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
KJVLooking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
GIGAKJVWatch carefully so that no one falls short of God's grace, and no root of bitterness grows up to trouble you and defile many.
KJVLest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
GIGAKJVAnd so that no one is sexually immoral or treats holy things with contempt, like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.
KJVFor ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
GIGAKJVFor you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. For he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
KJVFor ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
GIGAKJVFor you have not come to the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, or to blackness, and darkness, and storm,
KJVAnd the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
GIGAKJVAnd the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words, which voice those who heard begged that the word should not be spoken to them any more.
KJV(For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
GIGAKJVFor they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart.
KJVAnd so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
GIGAKJVAnd so terrifying was the sight, that Moses said, I greatly fear and quake:
KJVBut ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
GIGAKJVBut you have come to mount Zion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
KJVTo the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
GIGAKJVTo the general assembly and church of the firstborn, who are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
KJVAnd to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
GIGAKJVAnd to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better things than that of Abel.
KJVSee that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
GIGAKJVSee that you do not refuse him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape, if we turn away from him who speaks from heaven.
KJVWhose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
GIGAKJVWhose voice then shook the earth. But now he has promised, saying, Yet once more I do not shake the earth only, but also heaven.
KJVAnd this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
GIGAKJVAnd this word, Yet once more, signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
KJVWherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
GIGAKJVTherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.
