2 Corinthians 12
- 1It is not good for me surely to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
- 2I know a man in Christ who, fourteen years ago, was caught up to the third heaven. Whether in the body or out of the body, I do not know; God knows.
- 3And I know this about such a man (whether in the body or out of the body, I do not know; God knows):
- 4that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to speak.
- 5Of such a one will I glory. Yet of myself I will not glory, but in my weaknesses.
- 6Even if I wanted to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would speak the truth. But I hold back, so that no one thinks more of me than what he sees in me or hears from me.
- 7To keep me from being exalted beyond measure because of the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to strike me, to keep me from being exalted beyond measure.
- 8For this thing I begged the Lord three times, that it might depart from me.
- 9And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you. For my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
- 10Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.
- 11I have become a fool in boasting. You compelled me. You should have commended me, for I am in no way inferior to the very foremost apostles, even though I am nothing.
- 12Truly the signs of an apostle were worked among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
- 13For what is it in which you were inferior to other churches, unless it is that I myself was not burdensome to you? Forgive me this wrong.
- 14The third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be burdensome to you. For I do not seek yours but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
- 15And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you, though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.
- 16But be it so, I did not burden you. But, being crafty, I caught you with deceit.
- 17Did I make a gain of you by any of those I sent to you?
- 18I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? Did we not walk in the same spirit? Did we not walk in the same steps?
- 19Again, think you that we excuse ourselves to you? We speak before God in Christ. But we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.
- 20For I fear that, when I come, I may not find you as I wish, and you may find me as you do not wish. I fear there may be quarrels, jealousy, outbursts of anger, rivalries, slander, whispering, arrogance, and disorder.
- 21And that, when I come again, my God may humble me among you, and I may mourn over many who sinned before and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and indecency they practiced.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of 2 Corinthians 12 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVIt is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
GIGAKJVIt is not good for me surely to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
KJVI knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.
GIGAKJVI know a man in Christ who, fourteen years ago, was caught up to the third heaven. Whether in the body or out of the body, I do not know; God knows.
KJVAnd I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)
GIGAKJVAnd I know this about such a man (whether in the body or out of the body, I do not know; God knows):
KJVHow that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
GIGAKJVthat he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to speak.
KJVOf such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.
GIGAKJVOf such a one will I glory. Yet of myself I will not glory, but in my weaknesses.
KJVFor though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
GIGAKJVEven if I wanted to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would speak the truth. But I hold back, so that no one thinks more of me than what he sees in me or hears from me.
KJVAnd lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
GIGAKJVTo keep me from being exalted beyond measure because of the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to strike me, to keep me from being exalted beyond measure.
KJVFor this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
GIGAKJVFor this thing I begged the Lord three times, that it might depart from me.
KJVAnd he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
GIGAKJVAnd he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you. For my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
KJVTherefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
GIGAKJVTherefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.
KJVI am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.
GIGAKJVI have become a fool in boasting. You compelled me. You should have commended me, for I am in no way inferior to the very foremost apostles, even though I am nothing.
KJVTruly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
GIGAKJVTruly the signs of an apostle were worked among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
KJVFor what is it wherein ye were inferior to other churches, except it be that I myself was not burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong.
GIGAKJVFor what is it in which you were inferior to other churches, unless it is that I myself was not burdensome to you? Forgive me this wrong.
KJVBehold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
GIGAKJVThe third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be burdensome to you. For I do not seek yours but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
KJVAnd I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.
GIGAKJVAnd I will very gladly spend and be spent for you, though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.
KJVBut be it so, I did not burden you: nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile.
GIGAKJVBut be it so, I did not burden you. But, being crafty, I caught you with deceit.
KJVDid I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent unto you?
GIGAKJVDid I make a gain of you by any of those I sent to you?
KJVI desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
GIGAKJVI desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? Did we not walk in the same spirit? Did we not walk in the same steps?
KJVAgain, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.
GIGAKJVAgain, think you that we excuse ourselves to you? We speak before God in Christ. But we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.
KJVFor I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:
GIGAKJVFor I fear that, when I come, I may not find you as I wish, and you may find me as you do not wish. I fear there may be quarrels, jealousy, outbursts of anger, rivalries, slander, whispering, arrogance, and disorder.
KJVAnd lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed.
GIGAKJVAnd that, when I come again, my God may humble me among you, and I may mourn over many who sinned before and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and indecency they practiced.
