Acts 28
- 1And when they had escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.
- 2And the local people showed us no little kindness. For they lit a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
- 3And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, a viper came out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
- 4And when the local people saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped the sea, justice does not allow him to live.
- 5And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
- 6However they expected him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
- 7In that area were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius, who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.
- 8The father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of dysentery. And Paul entered in to him, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.
- 9So when this was done, others also, who had diseases in the island, came, and were healed.
- 10They also honored us with many honors. And when we left, they loaded us with such things as were necessary.
- 11And after three months we left in a ship of Alexandria, which had spent the winter at the island, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.
- 12And landing at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.
- 13And from there we sailed around and came to Rhegium. After one day a south wind began to blow, and the next day we came to Puteoli.
- 14There we found brothers and sisters, and were asked to stay with them seven days. And so we went toward Rome.
- 15And from there, when the brothers and sisters heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God, and took courage.
- 16And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard. But Paul was allowed to live by himself with a soldier that kept him.
- 17After three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together. And when they had come together, he said to them, Brothers, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
- 18After examining me, they wanted to let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.
- 19But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything to accuse my nation of.
- 20For this cause therefore I have called for you, to see you, and to speak with you. Because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.
- 21And they said to him, We have received no letters from Judea concerning you, and none of the brothers and sisters who came reported or said anything bad about you.
- 22But we desire to hear of you what you think. For concerning this sect, we know that everywhere it is spoken against.
- 23And when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at the place where he was staying. And he expounded and testified the kingdom of God to them, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.
- 24And some believed the things which were spoken, and some did not believe.
- 25And when they did not agree among themselves, they left, after Paul had spoken one word, Well spoke the Holy Spirit by Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,
- 26Saying, Go to this people, and say, Hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand, and seeing you shall see, and not understand what you see.
- 27For this people's heart has grown dull, their ears are hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes, so that they do not see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, turn back, and receive healing from me.
- 28Be it known therefore to you, that the salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
- 29And when he had said these words, the Jews left, and had much discussion among themselves.
- 30And Paul lived two whole years in his own hired house, and received all who came in to him,
- 31Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Acts 28 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
