Acts 24
- 1And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with an orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.
- 2And when he was called in, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by you we enjoy great quiet, and that very worthy deeds are done to this nation by your providence,
- 3We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.
- 4But so that I do not take up more of your time, I ask you to be kind enough to hear us briefly.
- 5For we have found this man a plague, and a mover of rebellion among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.
- 6He also has tried to dishonor the temple. We arrested him, and would have judged him according to our law.
- 7But the chief captain Lysias came on us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,
- 8Commanding his accusers to come to you. By examining him yourself you can learn about all these things, of which we accuse him.
- 9And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.
- 10Then Paul, after the governor had waved to him to speak, answered, Since I know that you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I gladly speak in my own defense.
- 11Because you may understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship.
- 12And they did not find me in the temple arguing with any man, or stirring up the people, in the synagogues, or in the city.
- 13Neither can they prove the things of which they now accuse me.
- 14But this I confess to you, that after the way which they call a sect, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets.
- 15And I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
- 16And for this reason I always work hard to keep my conscience clear before God and people.
- 17Now after many years I came to bring gifts to the poor of my nation, and offerings.
- 18Then some Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, not with a crowd or an uproar.
- 19They ought to have been here before you and made their accusation, if they had anything against me.
- 20Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,
- 21Unless it is for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.
- 22And when Felix heard these things, knowing more accurately about that way, he postponed their case, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will decide your case.
- 23And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come to him.
- 24And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
- 25And as Paul spoke about righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix became afraid and answered, Go away for now. When I have an opportunity, I will call for you.
- 26He hoped also that money should have been given him by Paul, that he might release him. Therefore he sent for him more often, and talked with him.
- 27But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix's place. And Felix, wanting to do the Jews a favor, left Paul bound.
