Acts 23
- 1And Paul, looking intently at the council, said, Brothers, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.
- 2And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
- 3Then Paul said to him, God shall strike you, you whitewashed wall. For do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?
- 4And those who stood by said, Do you revile God's high priest?
- 5Then Paul said, I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest. For it is written, You shall not speak evil of the ruler of your people.
- 6But when Paul realized that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. Of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
- 7And when he had so said, a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees arose. And the crowd was divided.
- 8For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, no angel, or spirit. But the Pharisees confess both.
- 9And a great cry arose. And the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part stood up and argued, saying, We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
- 10When a fierce dispute arose, the commander feared that they might tear Paul apart. He ordered the soldiers to go down, take him from among them by force, and bring him into the fortress.
- 11And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Take courage, Paul. For as you have testified of me in Jerusalem, so you must bear witness also at Rome.
- 12And when it was day, some of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would not eat or drink till they had killed Paul.
- 13And they were more than forty who had made this conspiracy.
- 14And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have killed Paul.
- 15Now therefore you with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you wanted to investigate his case more fully. And we, before he comes near, are ready to kill him.
- 16And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.
- 17Then Paul called one of the centurions to him, and said, Bring this young man to the chief captain. For he has something to tell him.
- 18So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me to him, and asked me to bring this young man to you, who has something to say to you.
- 19Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is it you have to tell me?
- 20And he said, The Jews have agreed to ask you that you would bring down Paul tomorrow into the council, as though they wanted to investigate his case more fully.
- 21But do not yield to them. For more than forty men of them lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves with an oath, that they will not eat or drink till they have killed him. And now they are ready, looking for a promise from you.
- 22So the chief captain then let the young man leave, and ordered him, See that you tell no man that you have shown these things to me.
- 23And he called to him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen seventy, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night.
- 24And provide animals for Paul to ride, and bring him safe to Felix the governor.
- 25And he wrote a letter as follows:
- 26Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix sends greeting.
- 27This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them. Then I came with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.
- 28And when I wanted to know the reason they accused him, I brought him out into their council.
- 29I found he was accused of questions of their law, but there was no charge against him deserving death or imprisonment.
- 30And when it was told me that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent immediately to you, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before you what they had against him. Farewell.
- 31Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.
- 32The next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle.
- 33When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul before him.
- 34And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia,
- 35I will hear you, he said, when your accusers have also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Acts 23 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
