Proverbs 6
- 1My son, if you have guaranteed your neighbor's debt, if you have shaken hands on a loan for a stranger,
- 2You are snared with the words of your mouth, you are taken with the words of your mouth.
- 3Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, when you have come into the hand of your friend. Go, humble yourself, and plead urgently with your friend.
- 4Do not give sleep to your eyes, or slumber to your eyelids.
- 5Deliver yourself as a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the bird catcher.
- 6Go to the ant, you lazy person. Consider her ways, and be wise:
- 7Though she has no guide, overseer, or ruler,
- 8She provides her food in the summer and gathers her food at harvest.
- 9How long will you sleep, O lazy person? When will you arise out of your sleep?
- 10Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
- 11So shall your poverty come as one that travels, and your need like an armed man.
- 12A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a crooked mouth.
- 13He winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, and gestures with his fingers.
- 14Crookedness is in his heart, he plans harm continually, he sows discord.
- 15Therefore shall his disaster come suddenly. Suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
- 16The Lord hates these six things: yes, seven are something he hates:
- 17A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
- 18A heart that plans wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to harm,
- 19A false witness that speaks lies, and he who sows discord among brothers and sisters.
- 20My son, keep your father's commandment, and do not abandon your mother's teaching:
- 21Bind them continually on your heart, and tie them about your neck.
- 22When you go, it shall lead you. When you sleep, it shall keep you. When you awake, it shall talk with you.
- 23For the commandment is a lamp. The law is light. Correction that teaches us is the way of life:
- 24To keep you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of a sexually immoral woman.
- 25Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyes.
- 26For by means of a prostitute a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
- 27Can a man carry fire in his lap, and his clothes not be burned?
- 28Can one go on hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
- 29So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife. Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.
- 30People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger.
- 31But if he is caught, he must repay sevenfold, even if he must give all the goods in his house.
- 32But whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he who does it destroys his own soul.
- 33He will receive wounds and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
- 34For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
- 35He will not regard any ransom. Neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.
