1 Corinthians 8
- 1Now concerning things offered to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.
- 2And if any man think that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know.
- 3But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
- 4So, concerning the eating of food offered in sacrifice to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world and that there is no other God but one.
- 5For though there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, as there are many gods and many lords,
- 6But to us there is but one God, the Father, who all things come from, and we are for him, and one Lord Jesus Christ, who all things come through, and we are through him.
- 7However there is not in every man that knowledge. For some with conscience of the idol to this hour eat it as a thing offered to an idol, and their conscience being weak is defiled.
- 8But food does not commend us to God. For neither, if we eat, are we the better, neither, if we do not eat, are we the worse.
- 9But be careful that this freedom of yours does not in any way become a stumbling block to those who are weak.
- 10For if any man sees you who have knowledge sitting down to eat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols?
- 11And through your knowledge shall the weak brother or sister perish, the one Christ died for?
- 12But when you sin so against the brothers and sisters, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
- 13So if food causes my brother or sister to sin, I will never eat meat, so that I do not cause my brother or sister to sin.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of 1 Corinthians 8 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVNow as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
GIGAKJVNow concerning things offered to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.
KJVAnd if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
GIGAKJVAnd if any man think that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know.
KJVAs concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
GIGAKJVSo, concerning the eating of food offered in sacrifice to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world and that there is no other God but one.
KJVFor though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
GIGAKJVFor though there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, as there are many gods and many lords,
KJVBut to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
GIGAKJVBut to us there is but one God, the Father, who all things come from, and we are for him, and one Lord Jesus Christ, who all things come through, and we are through him.
KJVHowbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
GIGAKJVHowever there is not in every man that knowledge. For some with conscience of the idol to this hour eat it as a thing offered to an idol, and their conscience being weak is defiled.
KJVBut meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
GIGAKJVBut food does not commend us to God. For neither, if we eat, are we the better, neither, if we do not eat, are we the worse.
KJVBut take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
GIGAKJVBut be careful that this freedom of yours does not in any way become a stumbling block to those who are weak.
KJVFor if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
GIGAKJVFor if any man sees you who have knowledge sitting down to eat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols?
KJVAnd through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
GIGAKJVAnd through your knowledge shall the weak brother or sister perish, the one Christ died for?
KJVBut when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
GIGAKJVBut when you sin so against the brothers and sisters, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
KJVWherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.
GIGAKJVSo if food causes my brother or sister to sin, I will never eat meat, so that I do not cause my brother or sister to sin.
