James 3
- 1My brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.
- 2For we all stumble in many ways. If someone does not stumble in what they say, that person is mature and able to control the whole body as well.
- 3We put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.
- 4Look also at ships. Though they are so large and driven by fierce winds, they are steered with a very small rudder wherever the pilot wishes.
- 5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. How great a forest a little fire sets ablaze!
- 6And the tongue is a fire, a world of wrongdoing. So is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of life, and it is set on fire by hell.
- 7For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.
- 8But the tongue no man can tame. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
- 9With it we bless God, even the Father, and with it we curse men, who are made after the likeness of God.
- 10Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, these things ought not to be so.
- 11Does a fountain send out at the same place sweet water and bitter?
- 12Can the fig tree, my brothers and sisters, bear olives? Or a vine, figs? So no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.
- 13Who is a wise man and endowed with knowledge among you? Let him show his works by good conduct, with the gentleness of wisdom.
- 14But if you have bitter envying and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not glory, and do not lie against the truth.
- 15This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish.
- 16For where there is envying and selfish ambition, there is confusion and every evil work.
- 17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
- 18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of James 3 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVMy brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
GIGAKJVMy brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.
KJVFor in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
GIGAKJVFor we all stumble in many ways. If someone does not stumble in what they say, that person is mature and able to control the whole body as well.
KJVBehold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
GIGAKJVWe put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.
KJVBehold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
GIGAKJVLook also at ships. Though they are so large and driven by fierce winds, they are steered with a very small rudder wherever the pilot wishes.
KJVEven so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
GIGAKJVEven so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. How great a forest a little fire sets ablaze!

KJVWho is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
GIGAKJVWho is a wise man and endowed with knowledge among you? Let him show his works by good conduct, with the gentleness of wisdom.
