2 Peter 3
- 1Beloved, I am now writing this second letter to you. In both letters I stir up your pure minds by reminding you,
- 2that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior,
- 3knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own desires,
- 4and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
- 5For they deliberately ignore this, that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water,
- 6by which the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.
- 7But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved to fire against the day of judgment and destruction of godless men.
- 8But, beloved, do not be ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
- 9The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some men count slowness, but is patient toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
- 10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with intense heat, the earth also and the works that are in it shall be burned up.
- 11Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what kind of persons ought you to be in all holy conduct and godliness,
- 12looking for and eagerly longing for the coming of the day of God, in which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with intense heat?
- 13But we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, in which lives righteousness.
- 14Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for such things, do your best to be found by him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
- 15And consider that the patience of our Lord is salvation, even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given to him has written to you,
- 16as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to be understood, which those who are untaught and unstable twist, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction.
- 17So, beloved, since you know these things beforehand, guard yourselves, so that you are not led away by the error of the wicked and fall from your own firmness.
- 18But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of 2 Peter 3 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVThis second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
GIGAKJVBeloved, I am now writing this second letter to you. In both letters I stir up your pure minds by reminding you,
KJVThat ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
GIGAKJVthat you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior,
KJVKnowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
GIGAKJVknowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own desires,
KJVAnd saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
GIGAKJVand saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
KJVFor this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
GIGAKJVFor they deliberately ignore this, that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water,
KJVWhereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
GIGAKJVby which the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.
KJVBut the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
GIGAKJVBut the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved to fire against the day of judgment and destruction of godless men.
KJVBut, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
GIGAKJVBut, beloved, do not be ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
KJVThe Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
GIGAKJVThe Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some men count slowness, but is patient toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
KJVBut the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
GIGAKJVBut the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with intense heat, the earth also and the works that are in it shall be burned up.
KJVSeeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
GIGAKJVSeeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what kind of persons ought you to be in all holy conduct and godliness,
KJVLooking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
GIGAKJVlooking for and eagerly longing for the coming of the day of God, in which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with intense heat?
KJVNevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
GIGAKJVBut we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, in which lives righteousness.
KJVWherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
GIGAKJVTherefore, beloved, seeing that you look for such things, do your best to be found by him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
KJVAnd account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
GIGAKJVAnd consider that the patience of our Lord is salvation, even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given to him has written to you,
KJVAs also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
GIGAKJVas also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to be understood, which those who are untaught and unstable twist, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction.
KJVYe therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
GIGAKJVSo, beloved, since you know these things beforehand, guard yourselves, so that you are not led away by the error of the wicked and fall from your own firmness.
KJVBut grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
GIGAKJVBut grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.
