Judges 19
- 1In those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite living as a foreigner on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a secondary wife out of Bethlehemjudah.
- 2And his secondary wife acted like a prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father's house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
- 3And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly to her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the girl saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
- 4And his father in law, the young woman's father, retained him, and he stayed with him three days: so they ate and drink, and stayed there.
- 5On the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to leave: and the young woman's father said to his son in law, Comfort your heart with a piece of bread, and afterward go your way.
- 6And they sat down, and ate and drink both of them together. For the young woman's father had said to the man, Be content, I pray you, and stay all night, and let your heart be merry.
- 7And when the man rose up to leave, his father in law urged him: therefore he stayed there again.
- 8And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to leave, and the young woman's father said, Comfort your heart, I pray you. And they stayed until afternoon, and they ate both of them.
- 9And when the man rose up to leave, he, and his secondary wife, and his servant, his father in law, the young woman's father, said to him now the day draws toward evening, I pray you stay all night. The day grows to an end, stay here, that your heart may be merry. Tomorrow get you early on your way, that you may go home.
- 10But the man would not stay that night, but he rose up and left, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem. There were with him two donkeys saddled, his secondary wife also was with him.
- 11And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent. The servant said to his master, Come, I pray you, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and stay in it.
- 12And his master said to him, We will not turn aside here into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel. We will pass over to Gibeah.
- 13And he said to his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to stay all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
- 14And they passed on and went their way. The sun went down on them when they were by Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.
- 15And they turned aside there, to go in and to stay in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city. For there was no man who took them into his house for the night.
- 16And an old man came from his work out of the field in the evening, which was also of mount Ephraim. He stayed in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.
- 17And when he had looked up, he saw a traveler in the street of the city: and the old man said, Where do you go? And from where do you come?
- 18And he said to him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim. From there I am: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the Lord. There is no man who receives me to house.
- 19Yet there is both straw and feed for our donkeys. There is bread and wine also for me, and for your female servant, and for the young man which is with your servants: there is no want of anything.
- 20And the old man said, Peace be with you. However let all your wants lie on me, only do not stay in the street.
- 21So he brought him into his house, and gave feed to the donkeys: and they washed their feet, and ate and drink.
- 22Now as they were making their hearts merry the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may know him.
- 23And the man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, No, my brothers and sisters, no, I pray you, do not so wickedly. Seeing that this man has come into my house, do not this foolishness.
- 24Here is my virgin daughter, and his secondary wife. Them I will bring out now, and humble you them, and do with them what seems good to you: but to this man do not so vile a thing.
- 25But the men would not listen to him: so the man took his secondary wife, and brought her out to them. They raped her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
- 26Then the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.
- 27And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and the woman his secondary wife had fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were on the threshold.
- 28And he said to her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up on a donkey, and the man rose up, and got him to his place.
- 29And when he had come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his secondary wife, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the regions of Israel.
- 30And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
