John 20
- 1The first day of the week Mary Magdalene comes early, when it was yet dark, to the tomb, and sees the stone taken away from the tomb.
- 2Then she runs, and comes to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and says to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.
- 3Peter therefore went out, and that other disciple, and came to the tomb.
- 4So they ran both together. And the other disciple outran Peter, and came first to the tomb.
- 5And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying. Yet he did not go in.
- 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb, and sees the linen cloths lie,
- 7And the cloth, that had been around his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
- 8Then went in also that other disciple, who came first to the tomb, and he saw, and believed.
- 9For as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
- 10Then the disciples went away again to their own home.
- 11But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the tomb,
- 12And sees two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
- 13And they say to her, Woman, why do you weep? She says to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.
- 14And when she had so said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and did not know that it was Jesus.
- 15Jesus says to her, Woman, why do you weep? Who are you looking for? She, supposing him to be the gardener, says to him, Sir, if you have carried him from here, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.
- 16Jesus says to her, Mary. She turned herself, and says to him, Rabboni, which means Teacher.
- 17Jesus says to her, Do not touch me. For I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brothers and sisters, and say to them, I ascend to my Father, and your Father, and to my God, and your God.
- 18Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things to her.
- 19Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the middle, and says to them, Peace be to you.
- 20And when he had so said, he showed to them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.
- 21Then Jesus said to them again, Peace be to you. As my Father has sent me, even so send I you.
- 22And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and says to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.
- 23If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven them. If you retain anyone's sins, they are retained.
- 24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
- 25The other disciples therefore said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
- 26And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Then Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the middle, and said, Peace be to you.
- 27Then he said to Thomas, Bring your finger here and look at my hands. Bring your hand here and put it into my side. Do not be unbelieving, but believe.
- 28And Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God.
- 29Jesus says to him, Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed.
- 30And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book.
- 31But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. And that believing you might have life through his name.
