1 Samuel 28
- 1In those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said to David, Know you certainly, that you shall go out with me to battle, you and your men.
- 2And David said to Achish, Surely you shall know what your servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore I will make you keeper of my head for ever.
- 3Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had mediums, and the wizards, out of the land.
- 4And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and camped in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they camped in Gilboa.
- 5And when Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.
- 6And when Saul asked the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams, or by Urim, or by prophets.
- 7Then Saul said to his servants, Seek me a woman who has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and ask her. And his servants said to him there is a woman who has a familiar spirit at Endor.
- 8And Saul disguised himself, and put on other clothing, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray you, divine to me by the familiar spirit, and bring up for me the one I name to you.
- 9And the woman said to him you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: therefore then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?
- 10And Saul swore to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord lives, there shall no punishment happen to you for this thing.
- 11Then the woman said, Who shall I bring up for you? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.
- 12And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul.
- 13And the king said to her, Do not be afraid. What did you see? And the woman said to Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
- 14And he said to her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man comes up. He is covered with a cloak. And Saul realized that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
- 15And Samuel said to Saul, Why have you troubled me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am very distressed. For the Philistines make war against me, and God has gone from me, and answers me no more, either by prophets, or by dreams: therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do.
- 16Then Samuel said, Therefore then do you ask of me, seeing the Lord has gone from you, and has become your enemy?
- 17And the Lord has done to him, as he spoke by me. For the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David:
- 18Because you did not obey the voice of the Lord, or execute his fierce wrath on Amalek, therefore has the Lord done this thing to you this day.
- 19The Lord will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines: and tomorrow shall you and your sons be with me: the Lord also shall deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
- 20Then Saul fell immediately all along on the earth, and was terrified, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him. For he had eaten no bread all the day, or all the night.
- 21And the woman came to Saul, and saw that he was very troubled, and said to him your female servant has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have listened to your words which you spoke to me.
- 22Now therefore, I pray you, listen you also to the voice of your female servant, and let me set a piece of bread before you. Eat, that you may have strength, when you go on your way.
- 23But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him, and he listened to their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat on the bed.
- 24And the woman had a fat calf in the house. She hurried, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and baked bread without yeast with it:
- 25And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants. They ate. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
